Free write is when you continuously write for a set amount of time without stopping to look back at spelling, sentence structure, topics, or crossing out words. Just write down whatever comes to mind. If you are stuck, just write down you are. Freewrite is one of the most effective ways to improve your skills of writing. It is an exercise that many writers use to help them collect ideas for a topic.
Free writing is meant to help for stronger writing because you’re simply writing. The more you write means the more you are practicing. When you practice at something eventually you become better at it each time. Just keep writing and you'll be surprised as to what you come up with.
I found that freewriting is a good exercise. It helps to keep your mind flowing with thoughts which gives more ideas. What is surprising is if you want to improve your writing, you will benefit from keeping a freewriting journal/diary. I don’t understand why some people find freewriting to be offensive because its an invitation to write garbage. I agree with Peter Elbow, if anything, it makes you better afterward.

I agree with you in the fact that freewriting exercises could definitely improve your writing. I found that it was hard not to edit! I push the backspace button more than I really knew until completing that exercise. I think that as long as I don't get graded on my exercise, I will be OK. Another thing about freewriting is the nonstop typing. To just keep going even if you run out of things to type about was a challenge. I guess that was because writing for ten minutes about the subject of freewriting was difficult. Maybe if I wrote for ten minutes about something that interested me, I could do a lot better.
ReplyDeleteHello Penny,
ReplyDeleteI agree that writing is definitely something that needs practice. Practice makes perfect. Well, it may not be perfect but it will be much improved the longer we practice. English and writing does not come natural for me, so you can assume I will be engaged in extensive practicing.
Like you, I do not understand those you think of freewriting as a negative exercise. I can only see the positive and think of how it will make us better writers. Just because you may produce some garbage along the way, doesn't mean that you have to use to all. Take what you want and disgard the rest.
I look forward to future dialogue with you.

I totally agree with practice makes perfect. Which is something I hope will happen to my writing in the next year or two and be able to see the improvement. Your comment about using a freewrite to help with start a paper about a topic is great. Starting a paper or any type of text is the hardest part for me, but once I get the ball rolling it becomes much easier. The only thing about a freewrite for me is not crossing out words once I start instead of just starting. Fun how things work out.
ReplyDeletePenny,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about not understandy why people would find freewriting offensive. I don't see it as a bad thing in any way. In anything, it's a good source of garbage, and this garbage has helped many people be better writers.
