Thomas and Victor “were children born of flame and ash.” (3:23) Thomas lost his parents in a house fire on the 4th of July when he and Victor were still babies. Years later, Victor’s dad left because of all the guilt built up inside. The two boys grew up in the same Indian Reservation and developed an interesting relationship.
Thomas is a sweet and caring person, but Victor is mean and always acted as if he didn’t care. At times Victor would tease Thomas, but in the end Thomas still stuck around. When Victor’s dad passed away, Thomas offered to help pay his way to Phoenix, Arizona. The only obligation was to let Thomas go with. Throughout their journey I believe Victor and Thomas developed a friendship. Victor believed that part of being a real Indian was to look like a warrior. “You gotta look like a warrior. You gotta look like you just came back from killing a buffalo.” (36:06) He also believed that an Indian man is nothing without his hair. Thomas wasn’t about looks, he believed that the only thing that mattered was the person you are inside. By the end of the trip, I think Victor realized that things are never what they really appear to be.

I agree with your insights about this movie. Victor cared way to much of what he looked like and how he acted that it didnt matter how he treated people in the end. He was all about the looks and if he looked good than thats all that mattered. Thomas on the other hand could of cared less about looks and wanted to make sure that he pleased everyone with his personality and kind hearted spirit. The two of them were a perfect match for each other because i feel like they equaled each other out. Thank your for the reading!

Penny,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you summarized the movie during your last paragraph. The two boys were very different indeed and had developed a friendship. The death of Arnold (victor's father) and the journey to go and claim his ashes was what brought them closer. Sometime it takes an unexpected event to discover something about eachother.
It seemed that Victor just had issues during his childhood. Even though he still had his parents, it seemed as thought they were absent from his life since they liked to drink a lot. He hated that about his parents so he took out on everyone else, especialy Thomas.
ReplyDeleteIt took Victor a while to realize what a good person Thomas really was no matter how annoying his stories were to him, it made them grow a stronger relationship.
Hi Penny,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this and I feel like you summerized there friendship extermely well. I also like how you brought up how Victor valued apperences more then Thomas and how Thomas valued the person themsleve. I think that was big difference between them that lead them to learn a lot from each other.
