all i asking for is my body, part II dialogue

Why do Kiyoshi’s parents have so many children?

I believe one of the reasons that Kiyoshi’s parents have so many children is because they just like having someone around. The fact that there are so many kids, no one will ever be alone.  For example, when Kiyoshi’s father is out at sea, his mother will always have someone to talk to so she will not get lonely.

I think the main reason Kiyoshi’s parents had so many children because as they get older their children will be able to take care of them. For example, when Kiyoshi's mother got sick she had help from her children while her husband was out at sea. Eventually, all the children will be adults with jobs that will help support their parents. Not only will they be support their parents but they will be able to help each other when in need.

Kiyoshi’s family reminds me of my husbands family. His parents had eight kids. Can u imagine living in that house? His sisters told me when they where younger they would have to do chores around the house such as dishes, every one's laundry, and sometimes cook. Some of the boys during the summer would work with their dad landscaping. They all helped each other out. And now my husband is trying his best to help his parents. He was able to get some of his brothers and sisters help buy his parents a car.

  1. Hi Penny. I like your point of view. I did not look at Kiyoshi's mother having so many children because she was alone. I figure they had so many children because the children support the family. I probably would have so many children too if they support me. JK. Is your husband's family Japanese? If so, do you think that it is a cultural thing?

  2. Hi Penny,

I hadn't thought of it that way before reading your post. That's an interesting perspective.

I can't imagine being one of eight kids; being one of three was chaotic enough for me. Your post has me thinking of the gamble the parents take. The more children they have, the bigger their living expenses, and the larger their debt grows. If they can have sons, responsibility for the debt will be shared, but they have more daughters...

Thanks for giving me more to think about.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  3. I also think that they have so many children because they never wanted to be alone and for the support. With a big family it is important that everyone helps eachother out and takes care of eachother. I know that if I were to ever have children I'd want more then one, for just those two reasons, so that they and I would never be alone and so that we can all take care of eachother.

  4. Hi Penny,
I can totally relate to your idea about why Kiyoshi's parents had so many children. My family consist of 5 girls. Though we have no boys, we worked and did chores for both my mother and father. They taught us how to be independently strong and reminded that we will be taking care of things in the future and not to mention that we will take care of them when they get older as they did for us from the day we were born. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this. :)

  5. Hi Penny,

I agree with you, I think that while the father was out fishing, the mom was never lonely. I didnt think of that, maybe she knew that since he was going to be gone all of the time, they wanted to have a lot of kids to not be alone. and also for the future, I wish that I could think that way also, but my brain will not let me, if I could I would have 2 more kids but I cannot think the way that his parents do. I just think of how crazy life would be with them young and me and my husband working, but I know in the future life would be so great with some many kids around.
    thanks for the insight.
